Up to 35 percent of women experience pelvic organ prolapse in their lifetime. When this occurs, the organs bulge into the vagina and sometimes swell past the vaginal opening. Organs that can be involved in POP include the bladder, uterus, bowel, rectum, and the vaginal apex. If a woman suffers a prolapsed bladder, for example, her doctor may suggest a vaginal mesh implant.

For a woman who recently went through childbirth, she may suffer from stress incontinence or SUI. This involves a leakage of urine during physical activity such as coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercise. This woman’s doctor may recommend bladder sling surgery, another term for transvaginal mesh implant.

About 11 percent of women will undergo surgery to treat POP or SUI in their lifetime. Over 30 percent of them will require reoperation for failed procedures.

What Is Vaginal Mesh?

Vaginal mesh is a surgical technique that uses a mesh made of either plastic or a combination of materials including animal tissue. It was created to permanently correct pelvic organ prolapse and treat stress urinary incontinence. The surgery is most often performed on women after childbirth, menopause, or a hysterectomy.

FDA Warning on Vaginal Mesh Implants

Reports began to flood in about thousands of women who suffered complications after their mesh was implanted. Unfortunately, most of the mesh manufacturers never recalled their dangerous devices. Later, the FDA stepped in, recognizing the complications of vaginal mesh are not uncommon. The device was then reclassified as “high risk” but that hasn’t stopped physicians from using the devices. It is also important to note that the FDA did not require vaginal mesh companies to conduct human studies before approving the device.

Vaginal Mesh & Pelvic Mesh Complications

Complications after mesh procedures include:

  • Bleeding
  • Severe pain
  • Mesh erosion
  • Nerve damage
  • Organ perforation
  • Infection
  • Dyspareunia
  • Vaginal scarring
  • Vaginal shrinkage
  • Neuro-muscular problems

Why File a Mesh Lawsuit

If you have suffered from injuries and illnesses after a bladder sling or transvaginal mesh procedure, you are not alone. There are over 100,000 lawsuits filed with victims receiving major settlements. Since 2012, victims of vaginal mesh complications have won a minimum of 20 verdicts in state and federal courts, accumulating around $300 million for the victims. By March of last year, several companies have settled thousands of claims for millions of dollars.

Thousands of women went into a mesh surgery to treat a bladder problem, they did not expect to come out with more pain and injuries than when they started. Filing a lawsuit will allow you to join the fight and stand up to big corporations like Johnson & Johnson and declare their lack of warning of severe side effects is not only dangerous, but greedy and unjust.
