WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that attacks the mesothelium. This is a thin lining found on several of the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma develops where the lining is present which may include the lungs, abdomen, or heart. According to the Center for Disease Control, about 2,400 to 2,800 individuals are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the United States each year. Mesothelioma has been linked to asbestos exposure and has been deemed incurable.

MESOTHELIOMA AND ASBESTOS

Those who have been exposed to asbestos as part of their job or everyday life are more at risk for developing mesothelioma. The microscopic airborne particles of asbestos can cause variation in the cells which results in mesothelioma. Unfortunately, the asbestos particles remain in the body long after being inhaled. Therefore, it may take several years after the initial exposure for the cancer to grow and become evident. Even very brief contact with asbestos has been found to cause mesothelioma.

• Cough

• Back pain

• Chest pain

• Anemia

• Enlarged abdomen

• Hoarseness

• Shortness of breath

• Pleurisy, inflammation of the tissues lining the lungs

• Frequent build-up of fluid in the lungs

• Fever

• Weight loss

TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

Pericardial Mesothelioma

As a rare type of mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma occurs in only about one percent of mesothelioma victims. This disease begins in the membrane around the heart. Symptoms of this form of cancer include chest pain, heart palpitation or murmurs, difficulty breathing, cough, fever, and fatigue.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

This specific type of cancer begins in the abdomen and with time may affect the liver, spleen, or bowel. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for about 10 to 20 percent of mesothelioma cases. Symptoms of this illness may include pain or swelling in the abdominal area, anemia, diarrhea, and weight loss.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common variety of mesothelioma. The disease occurs in approximately 75 percent of mesothelioma conditions. Pleural mesothelioma begins in the chest and lungs and has the potential to reach other major organs including the brain. Symptoms include constant chest pain, coughing, major difficulty breathing, fever, fatigue, and weight loss.

Testicular Mesothelioma

This form of mesothelioma is very rare, only affecting 0.3 to 5 percent of mesothelioma cases. Testicular mesothelioma alters the lining of the sac near the testis. This type of disease is often referred to as tunica vaginalis mesothelioma and the main symptom is a painless scrotal mass with a buildup of fluid.

MESOTHELIOMA TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment for mesothelioma highly depends on the cell that is changed. There are three main classifications of mesothelioma cells.

Epitheliod mesothelioma represents most cases of the cancer at 50 to 70 percent and it affects the line that protects internal organs. The most research has been done on this type and in turn, has the best prognosis.

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma accounts for only 7 to 20 percent of cases. Unfortunately, this type of mesothelioma is considered to be the most aggressive and is extremely difficult to diagnose due to the tumors having similarities to other cancerous conditions.

Biphasic mesothelioma is a mixture of the two cells mentioned above. It represents about 20 to 35 percent of mesothelioma cases. Biphasic mesothelioma can spread at wavering rates. Diagnosing this disease is extremely difficult and often requires a surgical biopsy.

Though medical professionals can use their research to create a treatment plan based on the affected cells, mesothelioma remains incurable.
