Halloween is here once again and children in our community are gearing up for a fun night of trick or treating. As parents, we know that while this holiday is great fun for kids, their safety is the most important thing. Today, we’re talking about dangerous Halloween hazards and how we can avoid them.
Common Halloween Accidents & Injuries
Because the night is an exciting time with many children prancing through town looking for candy, Halloween is also a risky holiday when it comes to pedestrian and trip and fall accidents. Depending on the type of accident, the injuries could range from typical bumps and bruises to a severe brain injury. In a previous blog, we discuss common Halloween accidents and injuries.
Top 5 Halloween Safety Tips
Check out our top five tips for staying safe this Halloween!
- Plan costumes that are bright or reflective – Try to keep your child from wearing an all-black costume that makes them difficult to see. Choose something that will get the attention of drivers while trick or treating.
- Try to avoid masks – Masks can block eyesight so try to avoid them if possible. If not, make sure your child can see easily out of it so they can see where they’re walking.
- Be wary of costume accessories – If your child has a large sword as part of their costume, make sure it is not too long, as it could become one of many tripping hazards on Halloween.
- Don’t forget flashlights! – And extra batteries! So you can be seen by others and see exactly where you are walking.
- Stay on the sidewalk – A child may see a well-decorated house and be tempted to run across the road to check out the display. Make sure to stay on the lit sidewalk and use the crosswalks to prevent slip and fall and pedestrian accidents.
What to Do If an Accident Happens
In the event of an accident, no matter the type, ensure you seek medical attention as well as attending to other parties involved. Once everyone is safe and injuries are being examined and taken care of, take note of why or how the situation occurred. Did a driver run a stop sign while you were crossing the road? Was a driveway poorly lit while walking up to the door for candy on Halloween? Keep a record of these observations and take photos if possible. Before anyone leaves, take down information of individuals involved in the incident as well as any witnesses that could help attest to your story. Next, contact a personal injury attorney. They will have the knowledge and experience to take on your case whether it involves a premises liability claim, pedestrian or car accident, or a drunk driving accident. Present them with those details and they will take care of the rest.
