Tepezza Lawsuit
Case Update: As of December 2024, 191 Tepezza cases were pending in the MDL. Tepezza lawsuits are in the early stages, and there have been no trials scheduled or court-approved settlements yet. The plaintiffs filed a motion to consolidate the cases in multidistrict litigation in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in March 2023. In June 2023, judges created an MDL in the Northern District of Illinois. The MDL continues to move along, with the first of the bellwether trials still slated for an early 2026 start.
Tepezza is a Treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)
In January 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Tepezza, Horizon Therapeutics’ treatment for thyroid eye disease (TED), under the Fast Track and Breakthrough Therapy Designation. The FDA also gave Tepezza an Orphan Drug designation because TED was considered a rare disease for which other treatments were not readily available.
Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune disease that involves inflammation of the eye muscles and fatty tissue behind the eye. Symptoms of TED include dry, red, bulging, or watery eyes; double vision; difficulty closing the eyes; and vision problems. TED is primarily associated with an overactive thyroid gland due to Graves’ disease.
Studies Link Tepezza to Hearing Loss and Tinnitus
Since 2020, when Tepezza became the first and only FDA-approved treatment for thyroid eye disease, numerous studies have found that hearing loss and tinnitus are associated with its use. Examples include:
- In Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Tepezza’s drug trial testing, funded by Horizon Therapeutics, 10 percent of the participants reported hearing loss symptoms including deafness.
- In 2021, the results of a study of just under 30 patients who had received four infusions of Tepezza found that more than half of them experienced hearing loss symptoms.
- A study of Tepezza in 2022 found that the rate of hearing problems could be over 81 percent. In that study, 22 of the 27 participants developed hearing problems.
- Also in 2022, a woman in a case study developed tinnitus after her third dose of Tepezza and hearing loss after her fifth dose.
Why Are People Filing Tepezza Lawsuits?
Tepezza (teprotumumab) lawsuits are being filed by people who received the drug infusion to treat thyroid eye disease (TED) and suffered hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) as a result of the Tepezza treatment.
