What Is Firefighting Foam?
Firefighting foam, also known as aqueous film-forming foam or AFFF, has been utilized to extinguish fires since the 1940’s. The fire-retardant chemicals in the foam, called PFAS, have been linked to serious health conditions in those exposed to it. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) are resistant to grease, oil, water, and heat. The chemicals have been found to build up within the body and show no sign of reducing over time. The FDA acknowledges this build up as the catalyst to serious health conditions including multiple cancers.
SIDE EFFECTS and cancer associated
Exposure to PFOA and PFOS, common types of PFAS, has resulted in the following cancers:
- Kidney cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Ovarian cancer
Additional Occupations at Risk
These complications linked to the foam have been discovered in more industries than local firefighting departments. The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) states, the military utilizes 75% of all firefighting foam in both, firefighting training and emergency responses. In addition, airport firefighters have been required to use the foam to extinguish jet fuel fires since 1970. Following 2018, the Federal Aviation Admin. (FAA), no longer requires the foam to be used. Nearly, 45 years passed with countless firefighters being exposed to this hazardous foam which resulted in life altering health complications. The list of firefighters exposed to these dangerous chemicals include military, airport, local/dept., and fuel firefighters.
Who Is Liable?
There are outstanding allegations against 3M, Dupont, and Chemours, the three manufactures of the firefighter foam. Allegedly, companies were aware of the hazardous nature of their foam but failed to take proper action to protect the firefighters who so heroically protect us. These companies are facing legal and medical scrutiny for their toxic foam.
