Most people are concerned with how the winter weather will coat the roads in snow and ice. But some do not realize how much damage the winter leaves behind and the potential dangers spring brings with it. From a deep pothole to lightning storms and flooding, take a look at how to avoid these hazards and a potential car accident.
Types of Spring Weather That Can Cause a Car Crash
Though the spring means some warmer weather (finally!) it also means risky driving conditions including:
- Flooding – The spring usually means lots of rain which could lead to flooding on the roads. Flash flooding is a big risk as well if the weather turns severe quickly and the community is unprepared.
- Tornados and severe wind – As seen from the wind storms over the past couple of weeks, wind picks up at this time of year which poses the threat of tree damage and debris on the roadways. If it escalates, tornados are a risk too.
- Thunderstorms – This time of year also means thunder and lightning storms that could cause power outages and damage to trees that may affect the roadways. Items that are not secured may be at risk of obstructing roads and pathways as well.
Common Types of Spring Car Accidents
With more people driving, walking, and biking due to the warmer weather, car crashes are prominent this time of year. These accidents range from poor visibility, to common traffic collisions, to pedestrian accidents. We discuss these accidents further in one of our previous blog posts found here.
Spring Driving Safety Tips to Avoid a Car Crash
In order to stay safe on the roadways this spring, we encourage you to follow these spring driving safety tips:
- Be informed. Watch the weather report to determine any potential hazards throughout the day.
- Avoid potholes (if possible). If you can, be sure to go around a pothole as they may throw your car out of alignment which could cause a crash later on. If you cannot avoid it, take it slow.
- Avoid large puddles (if possible). Those pesky potholes from the winter can sometimes fill up with water and cause a whole new set of potential dangers while driving including clouding your vision or hydroplaning. Avoid them if possible.
- Keep your tires inflated. This will help limit the damage to your vehicle when driving through potholes and other road hazards.
- Create a spring emergency kit! Similar to a winter emergency kit, make sure you have food, water, flashlights, blankets, and other essentials to stay safe in the event of an accident.
