As we enter November, the weather is getting colder here in Central New York meaning winter is well on its way. Unfortunately, this also means a greater risk of slip and fall accidents as well as car crashes. At Brindisi, Murad, Brindisi and Pearlman, we want to help keep the Central New York community safe. Take a look at our suggestions for avoiding a car accident or premises liability incidents this winter season.
Types of Winter Related Accidents
With the inclement weather and freezing temperatures, winter brings about specific seasonal accident types in response to the changing elements. The snow, ice, and sleet make for dangerous driving conditions and are frequent causes of winter car accidents. The slippery slushy coating on sidewalks and parking lots also can cause slip and fall accidents, as well. As CNY residents enter a warmer building in their snow boots, they also track snow that often melts in doorways, causing yet another slip and fall hazard. However, there are a few safety steps you can take to avoid these risks.
Avoiding a Winter Car Accident
Winter can take its toll on a vehicle. The freezing temperatures can affect your vehicle’s performance from gas consumption to tire pressure. In a previous blog, we touch on how to prepare your car or truck for the season. These guidelines can help with avoiding a car accident in the upcoming winter months.
Preparing Your Home to Avoid Winter Accidents
As a homeowner, you must assume the responsibility for keeping your house and immediate surroundings safe. Ensure your driveway and/or sidewalk is shoveled and free of ice for guests or fellow neighbors walking by. Also, keep a close eye on icicles forming on your roof. They are incredibly dangerous if they fall. While you are clearing icicles, don’t forget to shovel your roof to get rid of the weight of snow and to prevent your roof from caving or leaking. Finally, to prevent a fire, make sure you have your fireplace chimney cleaned and that nothing is resting against any heaters in your home. If you have a fireplace in your home, never leave it or any space heaters unattended.
Preparing Yourself to Avoid an Accident in Winter Weather
During the winter, you are at a great risk of encountering a slip and fall accident. However, there are a few steps you can take to prevent a fall. For instance, always wear appropriate footwear when walking outdoors. If you can, change into your heels or dress shoes in your office or in the bathroom of an event, so you avoid the risk of slipping outside the building. Be very cautious when entering and exiting a building as well, since many people track snow in that will melt, leaving puddles of water at the door. In addition, avoid carrying multiple items if you can. Utilize tote bags or backpacks so you are not juggling multiple items while walking on a slick surface. If you are uncertain if a surface has black ice, tap your foot to test the slipperiness. Lastly, help out your community! Report any untreated areas to maintenance personnel at the building or to the town to prevent others from falling and injuring themselves.
What to Do If You Are in a Winter Accident
If you have the misfortune of being involved in a winter accident, check out our top five tips:
- Make sure everyone involved is unharmed – The first step is to ensure everyone’s safety directly following an accident.

- Gather witnesses – Ask witnesses for their contact information should you need them to attest to the occurrence.
